Activity Charts

These charts reveal how possum activity changes across time. Explore when possums visit most frequently, how long they stay, and how their behaviour varies by hour, day, and season.
Possum Visits by Hour of the Night

Shows the hours when possums most often appear in the backyard.

How Long Possums Stay During Each Visit

Displays how much time possums typically spend during a single visit.

Average Possum Visits by Day of the Week

Compares how possum activity varies across different days of the week.

Monthly Possum Visit Trends

Highlights seasonal changes and long-term trends in possum activity.

When Possums Are Most Active During the Night

Shows which parts of the night possums prefer for visiting and exploring.
Evening (9:00 PM - 12:00 AM)

The beginning of nightly activity, when possums usually start appearing in the backyard.

Late Night (12:00 AM - 3:00 AM)

The deepest part of the night, when possums are often actively moving around and exploring.

Early Morning (3:00 AM - Sunrise)

The period before dawn, when possums may begin finishing their nightly visits and preparing to leave.

Fence Movement Heatmap

This heatmap shows the possum's favourite hangout spots along the fence. The closer the color is to orange, the more frequently possums appeared and the longer they stayed in that area.

Behavioural Distributions

Every visit tells a small story. Some possums rush through like they're late for something. Others take their time. These charts explore how far they travel, how active they are, and how fast they move during each visit.
Activity Distribution (KDE + Histogram)

mean = 32.48
sd = 25.99

This distribution reveals how active possums are during a visit. Do they keep moving steadily, or pause frequently? The shape of the curve shows whether most visits are energetic explorations or relaxed fence sit-ins.

Activity Balance (Boxplot)
020406080100Max: 100Q3: 47.35Med: 26.6Q1: 11.65Min: 0Active Time (%)

This boxplot summarises how active possums are during a typical visit. The central line marks the median activity level, the box shows where most visits fall, and the whiskers reveal the overall spread. It highlights the balance between movement and rest — and whether a few visits were unexpectedly energetic (or impressively lazy).

Speed Distribution (KDE + Histogram)

mean = 40.57
sd = 23.73

This chart shows how fast possums tend to move during visits. The distribution helps distinguish between cautious, slow explorers and quicker nighttime dashers.

Speed Range (Boxplot)
039.1278.24117.36156.48195.6Max: 87.45Q3: 50.36Med: 37.23Q1: 25.31Min: 0Average Speed (cm/s)

The boxplot summarises typical movement speed and variability. It shows whether speeds are fairly consistent — or if some visits involved unexpected bursts of acceleration.

Distance Distribution (KDE + Histogram)

mean = 351.53
sd = 311.15

This curve shows how far possums usually travel during a visit. The histogram reveals where most visits cluster, while the smooth density line highlights overall movement patterns — from short fence checks to longer nighttime patrols.

Distance Spread (Boxplot)

The boxplot summarises the typical range of travel distances. It shows the central tendency, variability, and whether a few adventurous possums decided to go the extra mile.

Long Visits, Big Adventures?

Are longer visits full of exploration — or just extended fence contemplation? These scatter plots show how time relates to distance, activity, and speed, revealing whether possums become more dynamic — or more relaxed — the longer they remain.
Duration vs Total Distance

Pearson r = 0.29

p < 0.001 (statistically significant)

Based on 414 visits

Each point represents a visit. This plot reveals whether longer visits generally involve covering more ground — or whether some possums simply enjoy staying longer without travelling far. More time doesn't always mean more ground covered.

Duration vs Activity Ratio

Pearson r = -0.45

p < 0.001 (statistically significant)

Based on 414 visits

Do longer visits mean more movement — or more sitting and observing? This plot explores whether possums become increasingly active the longer they stay, or if extended visits often include generous breaks.

Duration vs Avg Speed

Pearson r = -0.15

p = 0.002 (statistically significant)

Based on 414 visits

Are short visits quick dashes across the fence, while longer ones unfold at a calmer pace? This chart reveals whether speed changes with time — from brisk crossings to slow, deliberate nighttime strolls.

The Rhythm of the Night

Are possums little athletes at 9 PM - and calm philosophers by 2 AM? For each hour, this chart shows the average share of movement within visits that occurred during that hour. We look at how much of each visit was spent moving versus staying still - then average those percentages across visits.
Activity vs Stillness by Hour

Active and idle always add up to 100% within a visit. When green rises, visits during that hour tend to be lively. When the darker band grows, possums are mostly pausing, watching... or simply enjoying a quiet fence moment.
